"Surround yourself with really smart people" and other pieces of advice from one of America's self made millionaires- actress Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba is officially one of the wealthiest women in America who's made her fortune from scratch.

The Golden nominated actress has made major bank thanks to her non-toxic product line The Honest Company. The 34 year-old actress landed on the cover of Forbes Magazine's "America's Richest Self Made Women"  a few months ago and just recently we all learned that her company is now valued at 1 billion dollars- not too shabby right?

There is no one path to success, there are so many ways to skin a cat. However I love reading and listening to success stories of those that have made it . I always walk away with a little insight and food for thought. So to that end- here are a few lessons in life and business from Jessica Alba.

1. Shake the haters off
The Honest Company sells over 120 natural goods, including diapers, cleaning materials and skin products. However when Jessica initially came up with the idea of selling a whole line of non-toxic products everyone she approached was skeptical. "There wasn't one person who said, "Yeah, that can happen." I heard "Just do one thing really well and then you can expand" a lot. But I wanted this to be a whole lifestyle brand. Everyone I talked with in Hollywood could not wrap their heads around the idea."

2. Get the right team together
"It took me three years to find my business partners. You have to be brutally honest with yourself and understand your strengths and weaknesses. I'm not a business person--I'm a mom. I wasn't going to be coding. I wasn't going to be in the lab mixing potions. (Though I do test all the products on my kids!) I wasn't going to be the one doing the business model and running the operation." In an interview with Forbes Jessica says she's really more involved in the marketing and the design aspect in addition to the overall brand vision.

3. What about your friends?
Jessica credits her husband Cash Warren with helping her grow The Honest Company into a billion-dollar business.

"Gosh, it really wouldn't be possible without him," says Alba, 34. "He helped me put together my initial business plan. He was always my biggest cheerleader but never gave me unrealistic expectations and never criticized me so much where I felt defeated.

4. In an interview with Elle Magazine, Jessica was asked what advice she would give someone who wanted to have her job some day?
"You have to be tenacious, you have to be focused, you have to have a real vision, and be extremely passionate about it. Be smart about the way you are going to go into a marketplace and how you market yourself to the consumer you are going after. Surround yourself with really smart people."

Feeling inspired yet?  Let's do this!
