The female Trevor Noah? 6 things you should know about the woman Lupita Nyong'o calls the 'funniest Ugandan period'

If you're are African, like me chances are you are on a  What'sApp group with family members at some point while updating each other on your lives and wishing other happy birthday someone sent a video clip of Anne Kansiime doing her bit.


She's leading the way in a male dominated industry and is currently the top celebrity in Uganda. Oscar award winning actress Lupita Nyong'o who is  coincidentally in Uganda filming a Disney movie met up with Anne 3 days ago and called her the 'funniest Ugandan period.' She added that Anne is "a woman of spirit, heart and substance with a killer smile."




With the success of Trevor Noah leading the way, it's only a matter of time until African comedians make global waves.  So much talent on the continent. So who exactly is Anne Kansime? Here are 6 things you should know about her



  • Anne Kansiime is a Ugandan entertainer, comedienne and actress. She has been referred to as "East Africa's Queen of Comedy" by some East African media outlets

  • She was born and raised in Kabale to a now retired banker father and a farmer mother. “My mother grew everything except sweets, sugar and cooking oil,” she says

  •  The 27 year old graduated from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, with a degree in social sciences in 2007.

  • Her skits often explore relationships, gender roles and double standards In one of her most popular skits a wife offers her husband a packet of condoms. “My dear, you are going away, and I know you might fall into temptation,” Kansiime says “I trust you, but I don’t trust the women you relate with. Have this pack of condoms in case you fall into temptation.” The husband accepts the condoms but reprimands her for her lack of trust when the wife says "please can I have two?  just in case I get tempted as well"

  • Anne  recently celebrated garnering 100,000 subscribers on YouTube, and her funny comedy skits which have earned her over 15 million views on the site as well

  • After having sold out shows across the continent, she says that the job is paying off well now and she is reaping big."I have achieved so much. Comedy is a lucrative business. Right now I don't go around looking for jobs; jobs come looking for me." If you're in South Africa , you can catch the well known and loved Ugandan entertainer at the the launch of this year’s StarQt Awards.
