Hello party people!!
Beyonce sings:
"If you don't seek it, you won't see it
That, we all know (Can't break my soul)
If you don't think it, you won't be it
That love ain't yours (Can't break my soul)
Tryin' to fake it, never makes it"

Can't believe it's 2022 already! Happy New Year Peeps!
Feels like the past two years have just been a blur right? The pandemic has made me feel as though the concept of time is just an illusion. Like is today Monday or Thursday? It's insane! That being said - in 2022 I want to change the feeling of just wandering through day after day. My goal this year is actually to be more intentional. Let me explain...
I have been working like crazy this past year and while I am super grateful - in our industry everything can change at the drop of a dime. Every decision I've made work wise has lead me to these incredible opportunities and affirmed that I am walking in the right path. My plan this year though is so start thinking and executing on what the next 5 or 10 years of my work life will look like. It's not easy to plan in the face of uncertainty but in our line of work its important to plan out a career trajectory otherwise you will just be bouncing from gig to gig.My biggest fear in life is not to reach my highest potential. I want to fulfill my life's work on this planet and in all honesty I feel like I am just getting started. There's so much I still want to do career wise and this is the year to start putting those plans in motion. I am also SO excited about the personal projects I am working on this year. I can't wait to share those with y'all. Buckle up friends - let's get ready to live our best lives in 2022 and beyond!
A few days ago, I was invited to give a key note speech for a major brand and I wanted to share a little snippet with you.
A lot of people think that success happens overnight, and this couldn't be further from the truth. For some people it does happen at an instant but on average I have found that the old adage rings true - an overnight success takes ten years. When you see people living their best lives on stage or on TV/film it's usually taken them a really long time to get there.
What people also don't see a lot of is the grind, the hard work it takes to make it. For everyone it's different but for me it took me a long time to arrive where I am at right now. At this moment! People see the final product on TV but what you don't see is me studying my script, coming up with content ideas, doings tons of research, prep work for filming - its a lot that happens behind the scenes! But I do it gladly cause this is my dream. I LOVE MY job!
So here in New York the City is starting to open back up. Bars and restaurants seem to be back and they are filled with patrons ready to make up for the time lost. Weddings, gatherings, gyms, offices are back like they never left!
While I am so happy to see things going back to normal I am cautiously optimistic. Meaning there's still so much we don't know about the new variants. In fact some countries aren't faring as well and are going back into lockdown. Scary times! So I while be out in these streets I will be masked up and exercising tons of caution. In some ways I do feel like we opened up a little too quickly for my liking. What do you think? Is life back to normal where you are? Are we moving too fast? Let me know in the comments below!
My week has been ahhhhhmazing. It's been busy but ain't nothing better than being booked and busy. So let's recap shall we? Earlier this week, I co-hosted the Emmy's pre show for People and Entertainment Weekly. I had a blast as per usual. Felt so good to be back in the studio y'all. You can watch the fun show below:
1. Social Media - I follow prominent people back home and try to stay on pulse of what's going on. Twitter is my favorite medium for quick breaking news. Instagram is great for all the fashionistas killin it back home and finally Facebook is great for viral videos.
2. Read local newspapers - I read international news but I like to hone in on what's going on back home. Whether it's gossip on local celebs, breaking political news or updates on the pandemic - I always make time to read every single day.
3. Listen to the radio - It's so easy to just Google your favorite radio station back home and listen to their morning or drive time show. I love it when they have people call in to the radio station cause you really get a sense of what's going on. Also this is how I find out about new music and new artists.
4. Talk to my friends - It's important to read right? But really talking to people on the ground will give you all the tea you need. During the pandemic my friends and I have these amazing unfiltered and super candid conversations via Zoom and I always learn so much. I love LOVE talking to my smart friends.
5. Let's hop on a flight - Nothing beats being at home. Landing in Joburg en route to Zimbabwe is one of the best feelings in the world. Unfortunately because of the pandemic it probably wont happen this year but this is a key component in staying connected. I love being able to visit friends and family just spending quality time. Whether it's going out to eat, shopping at the mall or visiting museums - being at home is my favorite place to be.
It's so easy to get disconnected once you live in the diaspora but it's also very easy to reconnect if that happens. I love being able to exist in both worlds (my American and African side) and I wouldn't change it for the world.
How do you stay connected?
