In an interview with the The Improper Bostonian she revealed the reason why she refused to cave into Hollywood pressure and change her name.
Mama is so wise! Let's take a stroll down fashion lane and look at Uzo's most beautiful magazine spreads of 2015"My family is from Nigeria, and my full name is Uzoamaka, which means “The road is good.” Quick lesson: My tribe is Igbo, and you name your kid something that tells your history and hopefully predicts your future. So anyway, in grade school, because my last name started with an A, I was the first in roll call, and nobody ever knew how to pronounce it. So I went home and asked my mother if I could be called Zoe. I remember she was cooking, and in her Nigerian accent she said, “Why?” I said, “Nobody can pronounce it.” Without missing a beat, she said, “If they can learn to say Tchaikovsky and Michelangelo and Dostoyevsky, they can learn to say Uzoamaka."
1. The Coveteur
Uzo in The Coveteur
"This is my own personal [tip] that my stylist Cristina [Ehrlich] is also a big fan, of so I know she’ll support me in saying this: we’re big fragrance girls. I am a huge believer in fragrance. A woman should have a signature fragrance. I don’t care what it is, every woman should have one fragrance, and she shouldn’t change it. I think you should always have one, and it should be a solid, strong scent. I don’t necessarily think floral, but it should be a scent that isn’t overwhelming, but feels powerful and strong."
2. Essence Magazine
Couldn't take my eyes away from Uzo in the July issue of Essence Magazine! Beautiful! |
She slayed the June issue of AS IF Magazine!
4. Radiant Health Magazine
In the June/July issue of Radiant Health Magazine she said "as far as my fashion influences, I love anyone with timeless style, grace and taste. I love beautiful lines and anything that has something to say. You have to have something to say."
5. Angeleno Magazine
Crazy beautiful indeed for Angeleno Magazine
6. Darling Magazine
In the November issue of Darling Magazine Uzo was asked to describe 2015 in one word. "I would describe this last year in one word: blessing. Blessing, gift, magic — a magical gifted blessing. That's not a word! [laughs]
This year has been HUGE for the actress. Uzo won both a SAG Award and an Emmy performance for her role as Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren in the hit Netflix show.
The Brooklyn Magazine shoot was by far my FAVORITE Uzo spread of 2015. I mean just look at these pics!
From Brooklyn Magazine:
"And now that OItNB has raised her profile, with two Emmys, magazine covers, and a much-loved social media presence, Aduba is busy. In November, she finished a role in Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut, an adaptation of Philip Roth’s American Pastoral. In December 2015, she’ll be stepping into the shoes of Lena Horne, singing live on NBC in The Wiz as Glinda the Good Witch, during which she’ll get to sing the show-stopping “Believe In Yourself (Reprise).” And in February 2016, she’ll be in London, playing Solange in the Jamie Lloyd Company’s adaptation of Jean Genet’s classic The Maids."
