A three-year partnership has been formed with eThekwini Municipality to host the ESSENCE Festival in Durban, South Africa in 2016 and 2017.
Essence President Michelle Ebanks said the exact dates of the festival will be announced in a few weeks. In a telephone interview she noted that it will likely be held "around this time next year."
According to Essence Online - The ESSENCE Festival Durban will follow the format of the annual New Orleans event; presenting international performers and speakers to entertain and inspire, as well as a host of local artists and experts.
Who would you like to see perform at the festival? It would be great to see the Essence favorites like Mary J. Blige, Tamar Braxton, Jill Scott peppered with in local acts like Simphiwe Dana and LIRA.
Rev. Al Sharpton, Kelly Price and Iyanla Van Zant, are currently in Durban attending the Durban Business Fair giving attendees a sneak peek into what the Essence Festival will be like in South Africa.
