CD Review: BET Sunday Best winner - Joshua Rodger 'Unconditional'

Joshua Rodger's sophomore album is an offering of praise, traditional worship with a touch of R&B and some catchy choruses.

Albeit the Sunday Best alumni's second project, this feels like the real introduction of Joshua Rodgers - the artist.

The opening interlude sets the tone and signals that Joshua is about to take us to 'church'. Sure enough he doesn't disappoint, the next song "The Blood" is sure to take you to there. It's the type of song I imagine difficult to record in the constrained environment of a recording studio.

The genius of this album is that Joshua doesn't stray away from that"make you wanna park your car and worship" music - which he does so well.

"The Blood", "Your Grace" & "Draw Me Nearer" - these are so passionately delivered, seemingly from a real honest place of worship and they are sure hand raisers.

The production on the R&B infused songs complement Joshua's vocals. The production doesn't overpower his vocals & an opportunity for Joshua to exhibit his vocal restraint, which is not always easy for belter, but he manages to do this.

The album title track "Unconditional" is a mellow, soulful, laid back tune. I imagine playing this on a laid back Sunday afternoon - it's a grower.

Highlights in this album are "You Alone" & "Never Alone".

This is an album that Joshua should be proud of, it definitely stands toe to toe with some of the great gospel projects we have heard this year. I recommend adding this to your playlist.
