Why Fantasia why??

I'm sure by now you have heard the news about American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino announcing her pregnancy this past weekend. While I understand her sheer joy at this new addition for her family, I can't help is but wince a bit at this news.

Why?

Well, let's take a stroll down memory lane. Fantasia began a sordid love affair with married T-Mobile salesman Antwan Cook a few years ago. She was pictured by the paparazzi frolicking on the beach with this man while vehemently denied that they were dating. After months of refusing to admit the relationship-Fantasia apparently attempted to commit suicide (caught on camera for her reality TV show ) after Cook's wife tried to sue the singer for splitting up  their marriage. During the civil suit against Fanny, it was also revealed that she had an abortion while involved in the scandalous affair with Cook.

My head hurts just thinking of this drama.

While I understand that this is her private life and is no indication of her stellar  singing or acting abilities, we cannot deny the impact that celebrities have on their fans. The issue I have with Fanny is she represents a classic case of low self esteem. Admittedly she has been in relationships that weren't necessarily the best for her. She speaks candidly about the physical abuse she endured at the hands of her first child's father Rodney. I have a fundamental issue with women who will settle for absolutely anything just to be with a man. Ladies when will we learn that married men are off limits? Furthermore what example is she setting for her daughter? Or better yet her legions of fans?

Having self love is absolutely paramount before loving somebody else.At this juncture the public is still unclear as to whether Cook is still married or divorced. While I don't know Barrino personally I can't help but feel a sense of sadness for her. I remember the night she won American Idol and how I cheered for this woman. She defeated all the other singers against all odds and I was in tears right along with her. She appeared to be walking in the steps of Aretha Franklin with that distinctive soul siren voice. That promise that she held that night is diminishing in my eyes. Sure you can't judge artists for their personal lives but this just ain't right.

  2. I wish Fanny the best. I just wished she loved herself as much as "us" her fans love her.
