Why everyone needs to read The Help

I recently went on vacation to Spain for a little R&R with my younger brother. My plan was to hit the beaches of Mallorca with a great book and even better drink. I picked up a novel called The Help written by author Kathryn Sockett. Initially what drew me to the book was the commercials on TV. Check out the commercial below if you haven’t seen it.

The movie stars Viola Davis and Emma Stone and it looks amazing. Trust me when I tell you that this book is one of those books that you will not be able to put down. One night I stayed up until 4am to finish the book, it’s that good. It tells the story of housekeepers or maids in 1967 Jackson Mississippi. The author weaves delicately between telling the story from a black woman & white women’s view. I couldn’t believe it when I turned to the back of the book and noticed it was written by a white woman.

I believe everyone should read the book because it speaks to core of what makes us human. Regardless of our color we can relate to being in love, or out of love for that matter, abuse, death, illness or oppression- we all experience those commonalities. These are the ties that bind us. Not to mention the book is funny as heck, I had put it down a couple of times to laugh out loud!

Read the book before the movie comes out, trust me you will thank me for it! Have you read the book? What did you think?
