3 Quick Things I Learned On How To Turn Failure Into Success

I love a fun and informative Google Hangout. I'm currently on a super long roadtrip but thanks to technology I was able to watch a Google Hangout moderated by Tradesy CEO Tracey Di Nunzio featuring supermodel turned business woman Tyra Branks and the incomparable Sir Richard Branson. The hour long chat focused on the notion that a true entrepreneur cannot go through their career without failure.

Here are 3 quick things I learned from their discussion.

1. What are the most common mistakes that entrepreneurs make?

1) Not being customer centric
Tyra spoke about how some entrepreneurs focus on a product or service they love instead of focusing on the benefit to the consumer.

2) How can I make a lot of money?
Mr. Branson says instead of creating a company that will make people's lives better people entrepreneurs tend to focus on getting rich quickly. That can't be your motivation.

3) Find mentors to help through difficult times.
Mentorship is key. In addition to surrounding yourself with a great group of people who will celebrate the good times and lift you up through the bad.

2. Tyra's BIG risk

When Tyra was a supermodel with Victoria's Secret she had a lucrative 10 year contract with the lingerie brand. When the time came to renew her contract Tyra opted to walk away from the company. "The risk was walking from modeling and into new moderately successful  talk show. I don't think that was the smartest thing" she says. Looking back she thinks should have done a year or two long contract with VC instead of walking away. Being a model has an expiration date of course so her thinking was "you have to walk away before it walks away from you." However it would have been better to have a steady income and a graceful transition into her new career. That's a lesson for all of us, don't quit your job without a solid plan.

Richard  Branson on his big risk
"At Virgin we've moved into a lot of different areas. At times we almost put the whole company on the line. One of the big decisions we had to make recently after the spaceship accident was deciding if we should carry on. The whole company pulled together and with almost one voice - decided to continue. People are working day and night to make the next era is stronger."

3. The importance of self funding
The truth is when you're first starting you have to hustle. Tyra knows all too well about that hustle life since she just launched her own self funded company Tyra Beauty. "Being from the entertainment industry I would get asked to give my name and likeliness  to certain companies. That was not appealing to me, it's not what I wanted nor is it very fruitful in the end. I decided to risk my own capital and money for something I truly believe in. I didn't want to have a say, I wanted to have the say and in order to have that voice I needed to own that company."

Failure goes hand in hand with being an entrepreneur - you simply cannot avoid it. So how do you know when to try again after failure? I really loved what Richard Branson had to say - "as long as you know what the failure was and how to avoid it...it would be sad not to try again. Learn from what went wrong."

Failure humanizes us. There is no successful person who hasn't fallen flat on his or her face. As you aim to get fatter pockets it's so important to reach back to help others, not burn bridges in life and no matter what - NEVER GIVE UP!

How have you bounced back from failing? What are your tips for turning failure into success?

Karrueche shares emotional pics from her trip to Nigeria

Few people can make the transition from being a famous celebrity's girlfriend to being your own self made woman look as easy as Karrueche Tran.

Since splitting with singer Chris Brown she's turned her life around (it seems for the better) and now she's booking TV shows, movies and making appearances hosting in store events. Not bad right?

So what's next on her operation image makeover? Being a humanirtarian of course!

K is currently in Nigeria shaking hands and kissing babies, check out some of the pics from her Instagram page

A photo posted by karrueche (@karrueche) on

Here's my only gripe- when these celebrities visit Africa they tend to show one side of the continent. Yes visiting orphanages is important but it would be so refreshing for K to show a balanced side of Abuja to her followers. For some of them this is the closest they will get to seeing Nigeria, this could be a great"teach-able moment"

Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit an IDP camp in Abuja where many of the #bringbackourgirls came to. I remember seeing the #bringbackourgirls movement on social media but seeing it in person was a much different experience. I was able to listen to this mothers story of her journey from Northern Nigeria. It was very heartbreaking to hear and to see their living conditions. She said when it rains they have no choice but to stand and there is little to no work for her husband. I told her I admire her for her strength and I will pray for her and her family everyday. This was a very humbling experience for me-I cried at the thought of ever complaining about anything in life. It is unfortunate but I know God will protect them. We can not save the world but we can take small steps to help #WithLove ❤️ πŸ“·: @georgeokoro

Karrueche is also catching major heat for the outfit she wore to visit the orphanages in Nigeria. Is it too short? Is she flashing her luxurious life? Nope I don't think so. Folks on Instagram complain about any ole thing!

Natural Hair Chronicles: Co-wash vs. Shampoo? What's the Difference Between The Two?

For most naturalistas, deciding to embark on a natural hair journey can be quite daunting There is so much to learn and master to get your mane to behave the way you want it to. My living encyclopedia is my sister Erica, she gives me the low down on everything I need to know about taking care of my hair. A few weeks ago baby sis introduced me to the concept of co-washing.

The first thought that crossed my mind as she was giving me the scoop was "ummmm what the heck is co-washing?"

According to Real Simple 'co-washing is short for "conditioner - only washing". It means skipping the shampoo and relying on conditioner, whether you're a daily or weekly washer.'

Interesting!

Erica swears by it and she told me that she loves to co-wash once a week to restore the moisture in her locs. 'I co-wash to bring my curls back to life because they lose their luster from all the product build up in my hair. Most importantly I use it to cleanse my hair without stripping down all my natural oils" she says.

This year my focus is to grow and strengthen my hair so co-wash sounds like a viable option. So here's how to co-wash your hair:

  1. Wet your hair thoroughly
  2. Put a liberal amount of conditioner into the palm of your hand and distribute throughout the hair
  3. Work the product though your hair and massage the scalp as you would a conventional shampoo
  4. If time permits, sit under the dryer with a plastic cap for deep conditioning
  5. Rinse well with cool water
  6. Repeat the process only if you still have product in your hair or need to further scalp cleanse
Co-washing is not for everyone.

So make sure you read up about the benefits and disadvantages of using this method. Check  out this article and make sure you read this one too.

Ladies do you co-wash your hair? Or do you use shampoo?

#BlackGirlMagic: Maria Borges and her FAB Afro hit the Victoria Secret's Runway

Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid maybe dominating the headlines behind the Victoria's Secret show that aired last night on CBS. But for me, there is one SUPER special angel that stood out from the rest of the girls last night!

23 year old Angolan supermodel Maria Borges.

This is not her first time at the rodeo- it's actually her third time strutting her stuff at the Victoria Secret show but this time around she rocked her natural hair and killed it!

In a backstage interview with Essence Magazine Maria said  “I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria’s Secret show with my natural hair. I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said ‘yes’ I didn’t expect it, but I was so happy!”

Black women are beautiful aren't they? Weave or no weave, that glow is undeniable!

#WhatATimeToBeAlive

For most the Victoria' Secret show is just a teenage boy's fantasy filled with sexy models showing lotsa of skin in sequins and feathers. But this was still a major moment that deserves some pause.
Maria took a risk in a fashion world dominated by wigs and weaves and it paid off BIG time. In fact her versatility is making a bigger impact. I love that beauty is now being looked at from a wider spectrum and upsetting the standards that people have. It's amazing.

"The industry—thank God—has become more accepting of individuality. They accept whatever makes you feel comfortable, cool, and beautiful, I think that for those of us who grew up watching Naomi Campbell and all the top models who had beautiful long extensions, it's freeing because now you don't have to adhere just to that standard. You can change, you can go natural, you can have different colours, and you can be yourself."

My Thoughts On Being In Destiny Magazine's Power of 40 list

Where do I even begin?!?

May 21, 2012 holds a special place in my heart. Nope it's not when I first met my husband, no it's not when I made my first million (a girl can wish right), it's not even when I found my purpose in life. It's when I got fired. Well fired is harsh and untrue - it's when I got laid off. I was working a job I hated at a major corporation and on that day my then boss changed the trajectory of my life. She called me into her corner office and took a lot of joy in informing that May 21st would be my last day there.
Me in 2012 living the 9-5 life

So how did I take the news? Being jobless in New York City is not the business. It's an expensive city to live in. But believe it or not I was ECSTATIC! Who get's fired and get's excited? This girl right here! I had enough of the office politics, backstabbing, cattiness and general child-ish nonsense that comes with working at any corporation. I was #OverIt ya'll.

You see I knew that my time was up at that particular company. I knew that the job loss was the Universe nudging me in the right direction and pushing me towards what I was really supposed to be doing - working for myself as a celebrity reporter and blogger. Being laid off gave me a great opportunity to re-align my life and really hone in on what I wanted my professional career to look like. I had lost my way in the cosines of a plush job and the security of getting a nice paycheck every two weeks. This lay-off was a terrific opportunity to get real and deliberate about what the next phase of my life was going to be.

So let's fast forward to 3 years down the line and MAMA I HAVE MADE IT. I say this not in a boastful way but in a I-have-worked-my-ass-off-to-get-here type of way. I have interviewed countless celebrities, worked for major brands and built a decent social media following. I wouldn't have done all of this on my own without being laid off. May 21st is special to me because God spoke to me that day and after many years of ignoring HIS word - I finally listened. The jig was up, it was time to grow allllll the way up and get real.  It was divine intervention.

As I look back on my short career thus far, I just wanted to share 3 life lessons I've learned along the way

1. Forget 9-5 this is a 24/7 type of job

Working for myself is incredibly hard. I don't have office hours and even though I work on the red carpet my life is far from glamorous. Meeting celebrities is a lot of fun but consider this - my clients are in South Africa so I have to be constantly glued to my phone checking emails around the clock, I have to be able to travel at a moment's notice,  it takes a really really long time to get paid from clients *insert groan here* it ain't easy. Which brings me to my next point....

2. Hustle, hustle, hustle hard

In "U Don't Know" Jay-Z rapped
I sell ice in the winter, I sell fire in hell
I a hustler baby, I'll sell water to a well
I was born to get cake, move on and switch states

Beyonce's husband was preaching a word on that track. I have had to hustle hard since 2012 and constantly re-calibrate my life. When I first started out, I knew I wanted to be in front of the camera but over the years in order to make ends meet I've had to learn how to write and produce so that I can have multiple streams of income. I am constantly thinking of how else I can make an impact. What classes or courses can I enroll in to make myself more marketable? How do I network more? When is that first million coming? The questions are endless. Being a hustler means that at times I will fail - every plan I come up with is not going to be successful.

In an interview with Fashionista, designer Marissa Webb nailed it when she said :
"It was never that tada! — this is what I'm going to do and this is the only thing I'm going to do. You have to be willing to make mistakes and willing to try things out as you go."

3. Being Acknowledged Feels Good

I can't tell you how honored I am to be on the Destiny Magazine Power of 40 list. Can I be honest with you for a minute? Can we have a real conversation? When they first told me I made the list, I was beyond happy but after a few seconds the joy started slowly fading and doubt starting creeping in. I really started wondering if I deserved to be on that list. Destiny Magazine is such a respected publication and the founder Khanyi Dhlomo is one of my ultimate role models. Was this too soon?

Don't you just hate that inner critic? Ugghh the worst.

Well after a few hours of prayer and meditation (and a few drinks with hubby) I realized that this was exactly where I was supposed to be in life. Being on that list doesn't necessarily mean I have arrived - it's validation from the Universe, God and my peers that I am on the right track. I don't have a boss, so there is no performance review with areas of improvement.  I have to learn on the job and while this may seem daunting for some, I am blessed to say that I am living my dream. What more can I ask for?

What I now know for sure, is that I can bet on myself at all times and come out on the winning side - even when I fail. #IWillNotLose

P.S Please make sure to pick up the November issue of Destiny Magazine to see who else made the list!

Does it really work? Here's what happened when I tried Curls on my natural hair

"What makes our products so is that CURLS hair products contain cleansing extracts of grapefruit and pineapple to gently lift unnecessary debris while preserving the integrity of the hair"

Lately, I have been obsessed with trying out new products on my hair. My focus this year - or rather 2016 will be to grow out my 'afro a bit more. I have my staple products that I love such as Shea Moisture and Carol's Daughter but I have seen the Curls brand quite a bit in the past few weeks so I decided to give it a go.

The evolution of my natural hair
Pros:

1) Curls on Curls on Curls
I washed my hair with the curls curl cleanser ( essentially a shampoo) and immediately I noticed how the shampoo accentuated the natural curl pattern of my hair. That was a plus for me. I then used the coconut curlada conditioner and my friends.... it worked like magic. My hair was so SO SOFT! While my hair was still wet I used the cashmere curl jelly to twist out my hair and let it dry overnight.

2) Best Twist Out Ever
When I woke up the next morning I gently untwisted my hair and I loved the results. The curls were so defined it definitely was the best twist out I have ever had - in terms of how tight the curls were. This a plus for me cause on the nights that I am feeling a bit lazy I love to just tie a satin scarf on my hair and not re-twist my hair. So how did it work out for me the morning after? I woke up this morning and my curls were still in tact. #Flawless! Cheers to frizz free curls!

3) Smells So Good
Don't you just love a product that smells amazing? If so you will love this line. My favorite was the Cashmere Jelly, the product had this fresh, intoxicating scent that was equal parts light yet still fragrant on my hair

Cons
1) Well...
I have no complaints at all about this brand. My only issue was that I might have gotten a little too happy with the Cashmere Jelly (I told you I loved it), so I did get a bit of flakiness in the back of my head. I remedied that issue with a bit of oil and the problem was solved

All in all, I LOVED Curls. It is a brand that I will for sure be using in the near future. Have you tried out any new products? What are some of your favorites?

10 EPIC photos from Cassper Nyovest's history making concert at the Dome

A photo posted by Refiloe Phoolo πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ (@casspernyovest) on

This so so SO major. South African rapper Cassper Nyovest will go down in history as being the first South African artist to sell out The Dome in Johannesburg.

Before we get to the pics, have you ever wondered WHY it was so important to Cassper that he sell out the Dome? In an Instagram post this year he wrote:

“I've always had a dream to fill up The Dome but I've always postponed it cause it's such a big dream but just decided I am going 2 do it this year!!! It's takes about 20 000 people to fill the venue up and I want to do it alone and become the first South African act to do it. I want to make history and I am no longer running from this yearn. I believe the people of South Africa and our neighbouring countries are ready for something like this. I want to inspire kids and dreamers by showing them that you can do anything you can imagine through prayer, faith and hard work”.
And they said it couldn't be done. With 20,000 people rocking with him at the concert, it's clear that Cassper came, saw and CONQUERED. Can't hate on that at all. Now let's get into these pics...
Love David Tlale's message
