My Red Carpet Encounter with Huffington Post Founder- Arianna Huffington!

Arianna Huffington
When I got confirmation that I had a slot on the red carpet for the Time 100 Gala last week, I was immediately ecstatic! In case you don't know, The Time 100 is an annual list of the 100 most influential people in the last year compiled by Time Magazine. As excited as I was about talking to Hollywood hot shots, the one person I was beyond thrilled to talk to was Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington. This woman is the true meaning of beauty and brains.
Arianna Huffington in her gorgeous blue gown
As soon I saw Arianna coming down the red carpet, I called out her name and she immediately came over. She was so warm and engaging and I love that she looked me in the eyes while she was talking to me. She seemed so genuine. Check out our minute long chat on the red carpet as we discuss what’s new with Arianna!

Makho Ndlovu: You look stunning tonight, what are you wearing?
Arianna Huffington: I’m wearing Nanette Lepore

Makho Ndlovu: The dress looks beautiful on you!
Arianna Huffington: Thank you for that!

Makho Ndlovu: Congrats on your online streaming network, can you tell us a little more about that?
Arianna Huffington: Oh Yes! We are really excited, it’s launching in June. It’s going to be ultimately 24/7, but we are starting with 12 hours. It will be very much based on everything that’s on the Huffington Post our stories, our reporters and lot of community engagement.

Makho Ndlovu: Sounds exciting! Is there anyone in particular that you are looking forward to seeing at the Time 100 Gala?
Arianna Huffington: I’m really looking forward to seeing Tim Cook, who is the new head of Apple as well as seeing the CEO of Change.Org

Just as I was about to ask my next question, the event publicist came to whisk her away. We could have spend hours chatting, she was that personable. By the way, did you know that the Huffington Post just won a Pulitzer Prize? Yep true story. Arianna is such an inspiration!

Thoughts? What do you think of her red carpet look?

5 Things That Will Destroy Your Money

Winning the Lottery

75% of all multi-million dollar prize lottery winners declare bankruptcy within 5 years. All of a sudden they have millions of dollars but no plan, no financial education and a bunch of "friends" looking for gifts. The scenario typically plays out like this. The winner buys gifts for friends and family members, a nice house for themselves, quits their job and lives off the rest of the money for the coming years. The problem is that they're usually living a new more expensive lifestyle and the only cash that's moving anywhere is flowing out. There's no more income coming in! Eventually the money well dries up and they're forced to look for work again after being out of the work force for years. The property tax and mortgage expenses that are leftover are massive compared to their previous income level. Even if they do find work, the financial strangle hold is too strong to break. Most declare bankruptcy, fight depression and can't forget the wealthy lifestyle they used to lead. If you win the lottery, please put the money in savings until you learn to manage money. Invest it in positive cash flow investments so you have enough income coming in to pay your expenses for the rest of your life.

Getting a Divorce

I have an investment opportunity for you. You give me half of your money, your house and pay me $3,000 per month until my last child turns 18 years old. In return, I'll give you no return on your money. Does this sound like the opportunity of a lifetime or what? I'm not arguing for or against divorce, I'm merely trying to educate you on the financial fallout that will occur. People that go through this multiple times face this scenario each time. Although they might gain emotional or mental benefits, it does sometimes take many years to recover financially.

No Insurance

You're really taking a risk if you're not insured. I'm a big proponent of insurance as an investment in wealth protection. This includes homeowners, auto, life and health. We all admit that things happen in life that aren't pleasant. The problem is that many people just think that bad things won't happen to them, especially young people. When something goes wrong though, it can be devastating. Major medical bills are a leading cause of bankruptcy. I knew investors who were rehabbing houses that burnt to the ground during the rehab process. Bad things happen every day and one thing is guaranteed, some people won't be covered because they opted not to spend a few hundred dollars per month to protect themselves. One of the saddest things I hear happen is when a young married spouse with young children dies tragically from a sudden health issue, auto accident or similar event. Many times they haven't bought a life insurance policy and their family is left to pick up the pieces and struggle to get by. Don't let this story be your legacy, spend some money on insurance; you'll be glad you did. I can't tell you how many times it's given me financial protection when things go wrong.

Fear

So many people never succeed because they don't take the plunge. They're afraid that they'll lose money, but what's the alternative, to be an employee and barely get by for the rest of your life? Anyone who ever made a lot of money has conquered fear. Some very successful people have lost everything multiple times and even declared bankruptcy only to come back stronger than ever.

Failure to Plan

People have different personalities and tolerance for risk. Because of this people will naturally have different goals. The one thing that is not acceptable is to not have a plan. If you don't know what areas you will invest your money in, don't set aside time to educate yourself constantly on investing or don't have a timeline for hitting your goal, you're setting up a plan to fail. One of the most common mistakes younger people make is to procrastinate on saving or investing with the mentality that "I've got plenty of time, I'll start next year" but time flies when you're having fun and before you know it you're 55 with no money and only one option: the work until you die plan.

3 things I learned from Solange Knowles NY times feature

I was on the train this morning and caught a glimpse of the man standing next to me in the subway reading the New York Times newspaper. To my surprise I saw a picture of Solange Knowles (Beyonce's little sis) and was immediately intrigued. I am a huge Solo fan and I couldn't believe that I missed her feature in the New York Times. I googled the impressive article and here are the 3 things I learned from the article.

1. Solange has no aspirations of working with her sister:
Despite working with her much more famous sister Beyonce in the past Solange has no intentions of working with her sister in the future. “My sister will not record with me,” Beyoncé said. “She’s her own woman.”

2. Solo dines in my trendy neighborhood in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She talks about the last time she dined there with her older sis:
During a recent lunch at Walter Foods, a restaurant in Williamsburg, Ms. Knowles glanced around the patio with a sense of relief. When she dined there with her sister several months earlier, she said, patrons ogled them and reached for camera phones. “It did not feel like this,” she said, pausing from her steak salad to gesture at diners minding their own business. She wore a flowing white Tucker dress, Alexander Wang heels and powder-blue Prada sunglasses. “I’m so proud,” she added, “of her success, but I could not do that. It’s given me a pretty clear blueprint on what I don’t want to happen.”

3. Folks don't buy her indie aspirations:
Hipster Runoff, a satirical culture blog, described her as an “alt hipster blipster songstress” and wrote last March that “Solange Knowles is on a never-ending quest to find her niche in the indiesphere.”

Think Like A Man Movie Review: the Good, The Bad and the Ugly

After a whirlwind few months of high intensity publicity, the movie Think Like A Man was finally released in the US this past Friday April 20th. I have to give my hats off to whoever did the publicity for the film. I couldn't turn a corner without seeing posters for the flick. Publicity for the film infiltrated my magazines, gossip sites, basketball games and even some of my favorite reality TV shows.  I saw the movie on opening night and after watching the romantic comedy starring pretty much all of Black Hollywood (no seriously) here is review of Think Like A Man; the good, the bad and the ugly.

Warning-there maybe some spoilers so proceed with caution if you haven't seen the movie yet.

The Good
1. It's all about the Benjamins baby!-the movie raked in 12 million dollars on Friday and dethroned the much hyped Hunger Games movie. Overall Think Like A Man made over 30 million dollars in the US over the weekend. That is amazing! Sends a roaring message to Hollywood that a mostly black cast can bring out audiences in throngs.

2. Kevin Hart- The movie's title should be changed from Think Like A Man to the Kevin Hart movie. He was hilarious in the movie and Beyonce'd everyone by stealing every scene he was in. Every time he got on screen I just knew it was going to be good. I love how Kevin pokes fun at his height giving us permission to laugh at him and ultimately with him. When I saw the big reveal in the end with ex-wife I almost couldn't recover from laughing.

3.The Soundtrack - I got a chance to listen to the soundtrack before the movie came out and I loved it. Featuring performances from today's hottest artists (Ne-Yo, Jennifer Hudson, Keri Hilson, John Legend) the soundtrack is a perfect compliment to the movie.

The Bad
1. The relationship between Gabby and her beau- Let me be clear, I thought the script was cute for the movie-not groundbreaking but entertaining nonetheless. My one gripe though was the relationship between Gabby and (because I don't remember his name) we will call him Turtle from Entourage. The interracial couple would have made sense to me, except for the glaring height difference. I wouldn't have even thought twice about it had the producers or directors made it so painstakingly obvious by always putting Gabby in flats. Yes Gabby is taller than Turtle but that doesn't a mean a sista can't wear her stilettos! Wrong move! Ladies own your height. Just cause you date a short man doesn't mean you walk around like a shrinking violet. Wear your heels and stand proud and tall in the height difference between you and your partner.

2. Undeveloped cast members- As you may know the book centers around a group of women reading Steve Harvey's book and when their significant others find out about the book, they try and turn the tables on ladies There was one guy in the male entourage who's story could have used a little more developing. I really didn't understand his purpose (frankly I cant even remember the characters name) for lack of a better description he is the other white guy in the movie. In any event, they did him a huge disservice they should have either developed his story or cut him out.

The Ugly
1. Steve Harvey- No I am not calling Mr Harvey ugly, I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What I am saying that the movie in my assessment would have been better without the narrative features from Mr Harvey. Can I be honest with you guys? I refused the read the original book penned by Steve Harvey cause I just couldn't fathom taking advice from the comedian. Maybe that's just my hang up but his presence in the movie could have been gladly omitted. But what do I know? I'm sure Steve Harvey is laughing all the way to the bank given the meteoric success of the film.

So overall I give the movie a 3.5 out of 5. To be honest the movie exceeded my expectations (partly thanks to Kevin Hart) so I walked out pleasantly surprised.

Did you go see the movie? What did you think

South African Athlete Oscar Pistorius lands on Time 100 Most Influential List

Time Magazine

A few weeks ago I wrote about South African super athlete Oscar Pistorius in my Africa's hottest men - 2012 edition. Unbeknownst to me, Oscar was just a few weeks away from being named one of the most influential people in the world according to Time Magazine. How cool is that? Time Magazine selects 100 people every year who according to the magazine "inspire us, entertain us, challenge us and change our world"

Oscar Pistoruis
The double amputee from South Africa is in good company on the list joining other notable people like United States President Barack Obama, financial guru Warren Buffett, pop stars Rihanna and Adele and tons of other glowing luminaries. I am covering the red carpet  for this event on Tuesday and I am beyond thrilled. Cant wait!!!

Red Carpet Fab: Benji premiere at the TriBeca Film Festival

Quick- what do Mos Def, Erykah Badu and Kanye West all have in common? If you guessed creating dope music then you are half way correct- the iconic musicians have all worked with Chicago born music video directors Coodie and Chike.
Martellus Bennett of the NY Giants posed with his girlfriend

This past Friday I attended the red carpet premiere of Coodie and Chike’s first big screen directorial debut “Benji” at the TriBeca Film Festival. The red carpet had plenty of star power from today’s football and basketball stars including Lamar Odom-Khloe Kardashian’s hubby. Lamar told me exclusively why he came out to the premiere “I love Benji, I love the story. I was the number one player in the country myself and just to think anything could have happened to me at that time is unfathomable”

Coodie and Chike’s heart wrenching story about 1970’s basketball star Benjamin (Benji) Wilson was poignant, brilliant and inspiring. If you are like me, and not really into sports- chances are you haven’t heard about Benji until now. The movie transcended just sports and offered a peak into the short life of Benji in a respectful and insightful way. To put this in context Benji Wilson was the most highly recruited high school player in1984, the very same year that another Chicago basketball star Michael Jordan signed his multi-million dollar deal with the Chicago Bulls. Benji was poised for super stardom when his light was dimmed in a tragic accident in a senseless shooting prior to Benjy’s senior year.

The film featured appearances from R.Kelly (who once played with Benji in a Chicago basketball court) rapper Common, Benji’s family and a slew of basketball players including Tim Hardaway.

I also got a chance to get a quick glimpse of Robert DeNiro, one of the founders of the TribeCa Film Festival. He made a quick dash past me on the red carpet but I have to tell you, Mr. DeNiro has so much swag y’all, that man was dripping swagu.

The film will be broadcast on EPSN in October and available for purchase on Amazon later this year, don’t miss it!

WTF! Swedish Minister cuts racist cake (PICS plus VIDEO)

Quite honestly this one of the most disturbing things I've seen in a long time.

Sweden's minister of culture Lena Adelsohn Lijeroth has landed herself smack dab in hot water after photo's of her cutting into a cake showing a naked black woman. According to Swedish newspaper Fria Tider, the minister kicked off the event by "slicing a piece of a cake depicting a stereotyped African woman." As party-goers cut into the cake-woman's body, a human head screamed in pain.

Watch the disturbing video below:

The cake "was reportedly meant to highlight the issue of female circumcision," according to local newspaper.

But boy did they get this wrong.

Not only do I find it horrifying that the minister laughs it up while cutting the cake, I find physical characteristics of the cake upsetting as well. WTF where they thinking? Thoughts?

EVENT FAB: Royal & Langnickel Brush Launch Party

The scene at the Royal & Langnickel makeup brush line party
As you guys know, I LOVE makeup. As a former pageant girl I have been obsessed with makeup since I was born. I’m pretty sure I stepped out the womb with my face done in full scale pageant-MissUSA-Texas-style makeup. So imagine how I excited I was to attend a launch party for a new gorgeous set of makeup brushes from Royal & Langnickel.
Miss New York Teen USA Sabrina Mastrangelo with Makho
Speaking of pageants, Miss New York Teen USA was on hand for the makeup brush launch. I was so excited to see her! As soon as I saw the blinged out New York Teen USA sash and crown I had to stop her and talk to her. Such a sweet girl. I'm rooting for you at Teen USA Sabrina!

Also on hand at the party were a set of terrific artists who were painting exquisite pieces of art for the guests. Side note: how beautiful is that view in the window? It was really breathtaking. I'm sure it made for great inspiration for the artists.
Makeup artist Kevin James Bennett
Emmy Award winning makeup artist Kevin James Bennett was on hand to discuss the fabulous new Royal & Langnickel makeup brushes. Kevin enthusiastically told us how great the makeup brushes were and how contrary to other brushes in the market, the Royal Brush actually replicate natural hair. And guys, I felt the brushes, they are ahhhhmazing.  Not to mention the price point is great- they are about the same price as Mac brushes, that is nothing short of brilliant.

Makho in a FAB chair at the event. How great is that background?
Makho with the editor of Juicy Magazine Paula Trenfroe
The crowd at the event was filled with an eclectic, fashionable and beauty savvy set of folks. I was so glad to run into the editor of one of my favorite magazines  the beautiful Miss Paula Trenfroe. Paula is so sweet and down to earth, make sure you pick up the current issue of Juicy with reality TV bad girl Evelyn Lozada on the cover.
Makho with makeup artist Raedawn
I also got my makeup touched by by makeup artist Raedawn and I loved it! She used the Royal Brushes on my face to to apply the makeup and I was definitely sold on the Royal brushes.

The brushes launch online on Monday and will be available at retail stores later this year. Will you be buying them?

Basketball Wives Lessons: How to "Check" Your Friends

Guys, I have a confession. I have no idea why I tune in faithfully every week to watch VH1's hit reality "Basket Ball Wives". The show  is the very definition of bad TV and last night was no exception. The drama is always apologetically  cringe-worthy but I just can't seem to peel my eyes away from my television screen.
Cast of Basketball Wives

During last night's show one of the cast members, the ever–so-outspoken Evelyn got into a fight with fellow cast member Kenya. This was no regular cat fight you see, because in the midst of the word bitch and slut being thrown around - Evelyn proceeded to pick up a bottle of wine and throw it at Kenya.  Kenya escaped unscathed but the wine bottle almost cracked Evelyn's friend Shaunie skull wide open. When I saw that scene, my jaw hit the ground. I've picked on the fact that these women are bullies and are merely acting a fool to get a paycheck on reality TV. What a sad way to live.
The fight scene

Let's focus on Shaunie for a second. Not only is she Evelyn's friend but she's also an Executive Producer of the show, why didn't she intervene and check Evelyn for her barbaric behavior? As a matter of fact Shaunie made light of the incident and in no way reprimanded her friend for out of line antics. Let me be clear, if we are hanging out and you fight, throw bottles or act unruly- it will be the last time we kick it.

So this got to me thinking, as girlfriends, how do you address your friend’s unsavory behavior?

Each relationship is different and therefore the proper course of actions will differ with each group of women. However I think there are some underlying guidelines. For instance don't "check" your friends in a public setting. A friend of mine once thought she was doing me a favor by speaking about my tardiness in a public setting. If anything it infuriated me because it totally uncalled for and not the proper time or place to have this discussion. If my tardiness bothered her that much I believe my friend should been addressed in private and not in public. Not to mention there was alcohol in the mix, talk about a recipe for disaster.

Here’s my take, if you have an issue with a friend, I would suggest telling them
in private. Speak to your friend one on one; you don't need an audience to get your point across.

How do you address your issues with your friends? In public or private?

FAB Event: Hennessy Wild Rabbit Event with Solange, Erykah Badu, Missy Elliott and Timbaland

Erykah Badu is one of the faces of the Hennessy Campaign
On Friday night April 6, all roads lead to NYC's legendary High-Line stages for the über exclusive launch of Hennessy's Wild Rabbit Campaign.

With the tag line of "Never Stop, Never Settle" the event featured performances by maestro DJ D-Nice, superstars Erykah Badu, Missy Elliott, Timbaland and Solange Knowles. I was on the scene covering the event and I had the time of my life!! From the delectable open bar to the hot beats provided by D-Nice, this event experience was incomparable.

Solange arrived super early and stopped for pics but didn't speak to reporters. She DJ'd for a reception part of the event which wasn't open to the general public.  Love her fabulous fro! Solo then danced the night away to D-Nice and was in fact the first person to get up and start dancing. I love her free spirit!
Solange Knowles

Football player Victor Cruz from the New York Giants also stopped by!

Victor Cruz

Erykah Badu came out to speak to the press shortly the main event began. A perfect amabassador of the "Never Stop, Never Settle" campaign songstress Badu is also a licensed midwife. She exclusively told me that she helped deliver her first baby in February. How amazing is that?? Imagine Erykah Badu helping you give birth? I would literally pass out!!
Erykah Badu

"Think Like A Man" actress Gabrielle Union also stopped by the red carpet to promote her latest flick. Is anyone else excited to watch "Think Like A Man"? It comes out in the US on April 20th. Gabby Union told me that the movie will be released in South Africa later this year. Speaking of SA tune in to YFM to hear what her favorite place to visit in SA is.
Gabrielle Union in her white Bill Blass dress
Gabby looked amazing!!! 39 and killing the game!

Inside the party was EVERYTHING! As I mentioned Solange DJ'd during the presentation but D-Nice held it down for the part goers. He played a nice mixture of music and the crowd ate it up.
On the scene inside - I couldn't stop smiling! Too much fun!

Superstars Missy Elliott and Timbaland hit the stage and performed a few songs. The duo brought the 90's back by playing some of their hits and also premiering new songs. Guys, I couldn't stop dancing!! Funny story: I bumped into Timbaland's wife in the restroom (of all places) and she is absoulely beautiful. She had a Herve Leger dress and it looked like it was literally painted on. She seemed to be also midly surprised that I knew who she was. But that's me- I know all about the celebs and sometimes even their significant others. Ha!
Missy Elliott onstage

Erykah Badu closed out the night by performing a few of her biggest hits. Let me put if you this way-wherever Erykah goes I will follow. Her performance sent shivers up my spine, it was all that and a bag of chips. Check out the video below to see a bit of her show.

Africa's Hottest Top 10 Men: 2012 Edition

Last year I did a fun post about Africa's top ten most handsome men, and the feedback I got from you guys was great to say the least. Well, we are only four months into the new year but I decided to do another list of men from Africa that are too hot to handle. Please note that beauty is extremely subjective so if you have someone who you think you should be added to the list...please holla at me in the comments section!

Ladies and gents I present to you my list of Africa's hottest top ten men: the 2012 edition!
Who: Oscar Pistorius- Accomplished South African sprint runner.

Who: Marcus Samuelsson - Ethopian born chef
Hotness Factor: Married to a supermodel? Check! Cooked for President Obama? Check! And owner of one of NYC's hottest eateries- Red Rooster? Triple check! There are many reasons why award winning chef Marcus Samuelson is on this list but what we love above all - is his handsome this man is. Eye candy indeed!

Who: Dayo Okeniyi- Nigerian/Kenyan actor
Hotness Factor: Dayo is definitely one to watch in 2012. He was most recently cast in one of the highest earning flicks this year- "Hunger Games". Currently shooting a pilot for TV network ABC, Dayo's star is just beginning to ascend.

Who: Souleymane Sy Savane- Côte d'Ivoire actor
Hotness Factor: I first met Souleymane and his gorgeous model wife Erikka a few years ago on the set of a TV show we filmed in New York City. Erickka loved my name and promised me that if they ever had a baby-girl she would be named Makhosazana. Lo and behold and true to her word,  little Makho, my namesake was born into the world. I heart the entire Sy Savane family! Back to Solo - he is a feature film actor and starred in the award winning flick "Goodbye Solo". Making big moves in Hollywood, late last year he starred in "Machine Gun Preacher" with actor Gerard Butler.

Who:Comedian Trevor Noah- South African
Hotness Factor: South African born comedian Trevor Noah may be all about the jokes but he also means serious business. Trevor appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and in doing so - became the first South African to ever grace the Tonight show stage.

Who: Ozwald Boateng - British fashion designer of Ghanaian descent
Hotness Factor:  Ozwald is known all over the world for his trademark twist on classic British tailoring style. Inspired by his father's suits, Boateng opened his first shop in London's historic Savile Row at the age of 23.

Hotness Factor: I mean do I really have to write an explanation of why he's hot? I think the picture speaks for itself! Didier is the first black face for the new Aramis advertising campaign and has ripped the runway for Diesel, Versace and Jean Paul Gaultier.

Thoughts?? Is there anyone that you would like to add to this list?
