Can A White Parent Really Raise A Black Child?

A few weeks ago news spread like wildfire that Academy Award winning actress Charlize Theron had adopted a baby boy. I thought it was great that a single woman like the South African born beauty would embark on parenthood alone. So I did a quick google search to find out additional details of the latest celebuspawn.  Minutes into my search I started seeing the headlines about the baby's ethnicity. Seems that Charlize secretly adopted an African American baby. Color me surprised! I don't know why I was in the least bit shocked at the news of Charlize adopting a Black baby but I wasn't quite ready for that. After about 2.5 seconds I quietly reminded myself that love comes in all colors and that the most important thing was that this new born had now found a loving home.

Whenever you want to get people's true sentiments always read the comments section of a blog or news article. A comment one of the sites I came across linked an article questioning Charlize's ability to raise a Black child.

Essence writer Demetria Lucas wrote "A mother like Theron is facing an uphill battle. Will she understand what she will have to teach her Black son about this place in the world? That as much as she, a loving mother, sees him as an equal, as worthy of respect given to her as a White woman of means, that he will not be given the same?"

While I understand Demetria's point of view, I have to respectfully disagree. A few years ago, I had a very candid conversation with a very good White friend of mine. She didn't seem to understand what I meant by saying that as close as were, she would never get to fully understand what it means to be a Black woman. While we have similarities as women, she will never be followed in a store, racially profiled by police, or denied an opportunity because of her race. However when it comes to parenting I think we do the human race a disservice by looking at love within racial confinements. Yes its true that Charlize and her son will without a doubt have different experiences on this earth based purely on color.  But the values embedded into the baby and subsequent young man are extremely important and transcend racial boundaries. Knowing the difference between right or wrong, having common sense and respect for one's self are all values that can be taught without racial constraints.

Charlize joins a laundry list of White celebs that have adopted Black children. Madonna, Angelina Jolie, Sandra Bulllock are among the high ranking celebs touting Black children in their families. I sincerely hope and want to believe that the Hollywood stars are adopting because they want to share their extravagant lifestyles and abundant love instead of this being a fad. I'm curious to see how the children will feel about their famous parents when they grow up.

What are your thoughts on White celebs raising Black children? Does race matter when it comes to adoption?

EXCLUSIVE EVENT FAB: WE tv's 'Mary Mary' series premiere screening

Mary Mary on the red carpet
I have been a HUGE  fan of gospel singing duo Mary Mary since they came out with their now classic hit song "Shackles". I just loved how they infused their "coolness" into gospel music and breathed new life into a genre that was considered for the old folks. So when I found out that they were going the reality show route I was cautiously optimistic. If you take a look at the reality show landscape for women right now (Basketball Wives, Love & Hip Hop)  things look a little bleak - especially for black women.

I loved the sisters hair and makeup!
Enter Mary Mary to the rescue!

Folks, I saw a screening of their  reality show last night in New York City and I LOVED it! The series will be a mix of humor, reality, and  of course family drama. It's almost as if the camera's aren't there and you have been granted permission to sit in on their lives. You really get a sense of who the ladies behind Mary Mary are. The world finally gets introduced to Erica and Tina and  I can 1000% guarantee that you will fall in love with the show.

In an exclusive chat with Mary Mary  I talked to them about being nervous of the TV ratings, especially in this day and age where people just want to see drama and cattiness. This is what they said:
"It's a good show and I think people are going to watch it. We feel so confident with what we are putting out and we believe that people will like it".

Mary Mary doing a bit of Q&A after the screening
I also wanted to know who initiated the idea of the show. Tina told me:
"I was definitely against it. I say no first and then yes later. I was against the idea of doing a reality show, it was actually pitched to us, probably for 3 years before we decided to do it. I was thinking 'I don’t want to live my life out loud, I don’t want people's opinions about everything.  I don’t know how inspirational I am behind the scenes'.  So I was just questioning a lot of things. But what I realized is that we had something to offer in terms of the inspiration in our lives. We’ve both been married over ten years, happily- not perfectly but happily. We are both mothers of multiple children, we are sisters. We are group that's still together whereas most of the groups that came out when we came out are broken up. Seeing how we do those things can be inspirational. We are a ultimately a family that loves each other”

Check out a sneak peak of the show:

Makho at the Mary Mary series premiere
I also spoke to a few WeTV executives about bringing the show to South Africa and they told me if the interest is there, they would be all about it. So if you are in SA and you see a clip of the  Mary Mary show and love it- make sure you let me know about it!

Peeps in the US- will you be tuning in? The show airs on Thursday March 29 at 10pm EST.

LaLa Vasquez Anthony speaks out about her bestie Kim K's flour bomb incident (EXCLUSIVE)

I caught up with  VH1 reality star LaLa Vasquez Anthony recently and I asked her about her bestie Kim Kardashian’s incident of being “flour-bombed” on the red carpet: Before we discuss the Kim K incident, let's pause to chat about Lala's cute purse. She told me that she saw it in Vogue and she" had to have it". And peep how the colors on the purse are the same as the Knicks colors (the team her hubby plays basketball for) So cute!

Back to Kim K, for those of you that don’t know, Kim was walking the red carpet last week  to promote her new fragrance line and someone poured floor on her while she was talking to the press. Scandal!

Lala told me this about the incident also known flour-gate:
“It is what it is. You know it’s unfortunate that someone took those measures to make a point but I appreciated the way she handled it. Dusted herself and came back out and kept moving forward”

What do you think of the flour-bomb incident? Should Kim K file charges or let bygones be bygones?

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Kim Wayans on her role in Pariah, her famous siblings and the tragic murder of Trayvon Martin

Kim Wayans at the GLAAD Awards Red Carpet

I caught up with funny lady, Kim Wayans on the red carpet for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) awards on Saturday night in New York. I have to be honest with you guys; I really enjoyed my chat with her. Check out what Kim had to say about her role in Pariah, her famous siblings and the tragic murder of Trayvon Martin.

Makho Ndlovu: You look beautiful tonight, what are you wearing?
Kim Wayans: So do you! Your guess is as good as mine. Just a little ditty I picked up somewhere!

Makho: (Laughs) tell me about your involvement in the movie Pariah, how did you find out about this project?
Kim: I auditioned for it. My agent sent me the script and I was so blown away by the story, it was such a powerful and beautiful story and I really wanted to be a part of it. And I went in, auditioned and I got the role.

Makho: Congrats to you! Who are you looking forward to seeing tonight at the GLAAD Awards?
Kim: Everybody! It's just fun. It's a nice opportunity to come out and support GLAAD which is such an important organization that does such wonderful work.

Makho: Is this your first time at GLAAD?
Kim: Yes it is!

Makho: So what are you working on next? Where can we see Kim Wayans?
Kim: Well I have a one woman show named a "Handsome Woman Retreats" that I'm traveling with. I'm also developing some other projects and I'm also shopping a sitcom..

Makho: Well I'm sure you have lots of help from your brothers. Do you see them often?
Kim: We are very close. I see them all the time. Maybe too much (laughs)

Makho: What are your thoughts on the Trayvon Martin case?
Kim: It breaks my heart. He is a symbol of something that really has to change in our country. He could be my nephew; he could be my little brother. Every black man I know has a story to tell about being harassed...

Makho: Very true. Famous or non famous black men...
Kim: Yes, just based on what they look like and that has got to stop. My heart is broken and it goes out to his parents and everyone involved in his situation.

Kim’s movie Pariah won big at the GLAAD Awards and scooped the outstanding feature film award. Congrats to Kim and the cast! Did you see the Pariah, thoughts?

Pics from the GLAAD Awards Red Carpet

On Saturday afternoon I attended the red carpet for the GLAAD Awards. I was there on behalf of Global Grind and met a plethora of FAB celebrities. I really had so much fun! My most memorable part of the night was when Jay Manuel from ANTM came over and told me he loved my dress and that it was so "va va voom". Ha! I also enjoyed chatting with Janet Mock and Emil Wilbken. Ahh good times! Check out a few pics from the red carpet.

Rihanna says" women cannot stand to see another woman do better?" Do you agree?

This past weekend I did a Global Grind red carpet gig at the GLAAD Awards in NYC and not to toot my own horn (but toot toot) I looked hot! But don't get me wrong, I can't take credit for my glam transformation, my  fairy godmother Marshana (and also good friend) sprinkled fairy dust all over me and had my makeup, hair, and even my dress looking like a million bucks!! Ladies can you imagine? One woman helping another woman look fabulous and doing so with no shade at all? Unbelievable!!

Pop star Rihanna was on a UK television show and she shared her truth about how women compete with one another. "It will always be a competition [Women are] very competitive beings and we cannot stand to see another woman do better than us, you know, that bothers us a lot. As much as you guys have egos, our egos are a little bigger. We're just a lot better at hiding them”

These words here: “we cannot stand to see another woman do better than us” bothered me to my core. I disagree with Rih-Rih, I am NOT “bothered” when I see another woman doing well, I love to see women flourish and do great things. When I meet a woman who is doing IT (in whatever field) I immediately want to gravitate towards her and want to soak up some of that positive energy. I have never understood the jealousy and immaturity behind not wanting another woman to succeed. To me it speaks to someone who has low self esteem and cannot validate their self worth unless they are on top. Utter ridiculousness!

I have known a young lady who on the surface seems to have it all. Beautiful, smart, outgoing she seems to the perfect package. Underneath it all however she has a mean competitive streak. Her mission is to be the only alpha female in the room. She’s even competitive in all areas ranging from physical looks, life, work even relationships. Now sisters, that is just sad. There is nothing wrong with a little healthy competition but if you find yourself constantly sizing up other women including your friends- you may need to run and don't walk to see a mental health counselor.

So talk to me-do you compete with your girlfriends?

Images and my MSBNC video from the NYC Million Hoodie March

Last night I attended the Million Hoodie March in NYC city in honor Trayvon Martin. I wore my red hoodie in support of the 17 year old young man who was gunned home in cold blood in what seems to be an apparent hate crime. Words fail me in trying to describe how this case impacts me. To think that in this day and age something as outrageous as this could happen in America is horrifying. As the facts began to emerge on this case I really hope and pray that justice will be served. Trayvon's parents walked past me yesterday and the look on his mother's face will stay with me forever. The pain that was written all over her face was just heartbreaking. Regardless of what your race is, everyone should appalled at this case. This is the Emmett Till of our generation.

Check out a few pictures and video from the rally:

First Ladies of Style: Beyonce & Michelle Obama

So I'm pretty that my invite for Michelle Obama's NYC fundraiser dinner last night must have got lost in the mail. But is' all good though cause I am quite sure there will be other opportunities to kick it with my favorite first lady of all time.

Check out pics of the ladies making the rounds in NYC.

Beyonce was one of the guests at the dinner and love her or hate her we can all admit that her post baby body is just ridic. To say she looks amazing is just a huge understatement.
Michelle Obama was also pictured chatting it up with talk show host David Letterman. The First Lady shared some personal details about her late father who suffered from multiple sclerosis and was unable to walk. "I think I learned from him the notion of unconditional love, the notion that kids don't really need anything but to know that their parents adore them. I think that's the greatest gift they gave us, just their constant support and stability. We had rules, we had boundaries, but there wasn't anything our dad wouldn't do for us," Obama said as tears welled in her eyes. She quickly opted to make light of the situation: "Don't make me cry. This isn't 'Oprah!' This is supposed to be Letterman. Where are the laughs?"

Love these Ladies!

Would you allow an attractive woman to be your maid or husband's assistant?

Lala pictured with husband Carmelo and son Kiyan

Last night as tired as I was, I battled the sandman tap-dancing my on my eyelids to watch the season premiere of VH1's reality show - Lala's Full Court. For those of you who don't know who Lala is, she is a former MTV VJ and is currently married to New York Knicks basketball player Carmelo Anthony. Of course we are talking about reality TV here, so nothing is ever really 100% unscripted. That being said though, last night seemed to be a particularly interesting (albeit heavily scripted) show.

During the series, Lala met up with her friend  popular radio host Charlamagne at a make-up photo shoot.  If you haven't heard about Charlamagne, let me warn you. He just messy! So I knew as soon as he entered the picture things would get interesting. While on set, Charlamagne seemed rather mystified as to why Lala would hire an attractive female assistant (Asani) who not only works with the entire family but also travels alone with Lala's husband. At one point in the show, Lala's friend began planting seeds in her head about her man possibly stepping out on her Asani -right under her nose.

So here's where I kinda lost my mind.

Lala scheduled a dinner with the Asani to ask her face to face if she was indeed sleeping with her husband. Lala, why didn't you ask your husband? If you suspect any infidelity why confront Asani (who of course refuted the rumors) and not the person you took your vows with? I can’t understand women who have beef with the "other woman" in question rather than their partners. Hold your men accountable ladies!

In Zimbabwe it's a very common thing to have maids in the house to help out with chores such as cleaning, cooking and taking care of the kids. I've heard women often say they could never have attractive or young women in their house because it would be too much temptation for their husband. Ladies, if you can agree with these sentiments then sadly you have married the wrong person. If you can't trust your partner on that level then something is fundamentally broken. You need to leave that relationship ASAP.

So talk to me, would you let your husband have an attractive assistant? Or would it be too much temptation for him?

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Supermodel Chrissy Teigen

Last night I had the distinct pleasure of attending the RAOUL shop launch at Bloomingdale's on Lexington Ave. The designer’s clothes are absolutely beautiful and you check them out here. The ambiance at the party was really nice, lots of champagne flowing, a DJ pumping out haute music, a never ending supply of delicious cupcakes and even a supermodel in the mix.

Chrissy Teigen
Former Victoria Secret Model Chrissy Teigen was one of the special guests at the event last night. Most of you probably know her as singer John Legend’s fiancee.  I have to tell you guys, it was so much fun talking with her. Not only is she beautiful but she was extremely personable, bubbly and down to earth.
I wish I could say the same for her management team. Honey, the woman she was with straight gave me the stank face when I asked if Chrissy was talking to press. To make matters worse, I probably talked to Chrissy for a full 3 minutes before another one of handlers (a slightly short man) interrupted. Thank goodness Chrissy seemed unfazed and was an absolute professional amidst all the craziness.

We talked about her hair extensions falling out at the White House, her fiance John Legend and what's next for her. Read in:

Makho: I follow you on twitter and saw that the unimaginable happened last night. Your hair extensions fell out while you were at the White House. Girl, what happened?
Chrissy: We were in a holding area that they put us in before we went down to the cocktail area. The holding area was actually her (Michelle Obama’s) office. So we’re sitting down and I just noticed a few overly hair sprayed areas. So I kind of ran my fingers through my hair and I was like “oh s**t. of course”.
Chrissy's extensions fell out at the White House

Makho: Ohmygoodness so you realize that your weave came out of your hair. How do you even play that off?
Chrissy: I had this tiny little purse and I can’t have a piece of hair hanging out of it because people will be like “what the hell is that?” So I turn to John and say, “please can you tuck this away?” So that night he had hair in his pocket. I mean this kind of stuff seems to always happen to me. Nothing’s ever just classy.

Makho: I thought that was so funny. I love that you took a picture and posted it on twitter. So tell me why you came out to Bloomingdale's tonight?
Chrissy: First of all, we are always presented with of lots brands. I’ve gone to Macy's and Bloomingdale's and everything in between to represent a brand or say that I love something. One thing that was very different about this was that instead of the boxy clothes that I’m usually given, I didn’t have the need to once - wear a trench coat over it!
Chrissy in her RAOUL dress

Makho: Yeah, your dress is beautiful.
Chrissy: Thank you! I have to wear the designer’s clothes to event and this dress I’m wearing was very much my style and ready to wear. No styling needed! Just very easy and very effortless.  The fabrics were beautiful and the color palette was awesome.

Makho: Did you know about the designer RAOUL before the event?
Chrissy: Yes I did my research. I went online and the online stuff was absolutely gorgeous so I knew this was going to be a winning event already. He didn’t need us here at all! (Laughs)
RAOUL models

Makho: I know you just got engaged, which is fantastic. Congratulations! Do you ever get tired of people asking you about your fiance John Legend?
Chrissy: I mean it’s something you just learn to deal with. The hard part is you become very skeptical of anything that people want to do with you. People will say, “Oh would you like to host our event?” And I will reply “Oh yes, I would love to” And 2 emails later they are like “what about John?” I just know that’s always coming.
Chrissy with her boo John Legend

Makho: But you are an accomplished woman in your own right. You were a Victoria’s Secret supermodel..
Chrissy: Yeah but you just get to a point where you are skeptical. And it happens enough to where you are like uggghh. That’s the thing that bothers me, but I don’t mind being asked about him. We are obviously engaged and I am very outspoken. He doesn’t care that I talk about us, we are not hiding anything.

Makho: So what’s next for you Chrissy Teigen?
Chrissy: I’m in Sports Illustrated again. Right now I'm working on my second season of the Chrissy Teigen swimsuit line. I’m in full wedding planning mode so the swimsuit line has taken a totally different turn. It’s much more romantic and colors are very feminine.  What’s funny is one day, I’m picking out colors for the wedding and the next day I'm pick out colors for the swimsuit line and I’m finding it’s the same colors so I’m in that brain right now.

I am sure Chrissy will make a beautiful bride, can’t wait to see the wedding pics!

Here are some more pics from last night's event!!
