Review of VH1's Single Ladies

Last night was the 2 hour premiere of the VH1 original comedy "Single Ladies". Billed as a mix of "Sex in the City" and "Girlfriends" the show stars gorgeous  actresses Stacey Dash, Lisa Raye, Lauren London and new comer Charity Shea.  I won't lie to you, I was genuinely excited to see the show. Surely this dramedy (drama and comedy) produced by Queen Latifah was going to be amazing! I mean the promo clips released months ago showed tons of promise. I was so amped for the series premiere.

Man oh man was I in for a let down.

Saying the show was  disappointment is an understatement. Let me start by saying I understand how difficult it is to get a black show on to a major network so I applaud VH1 for green lighting this project. We've come a long way since the Flavor of Love days. However, last night's show was lackluster at best.

What didn't I like? Let's start with all the drama that popped off in the first 5 minutes of the show. It felt immediately like a Tyler Perry production. Very melodramatic and extreme. I compared the show to a Nigerian movie where the film goes on and on with several plot lines enough to give you whiplash. Oh and let's discuss the acting. As much as I love Lisa Raye and Stacey Dash these women are clearly not known for their Oscar worthy acting skills. In my humble opinion the meaty roles on the show were not suitable for the actresses. Too much dialogue, especially for Stacy..at times I felt like I was watching a bad high school play.

On the bright side the show had plenty of guest stars, Kim Porter (Diddy's babymama), Chilli, Cam'Ron to add a little flavor. The stand out of the show was Lisa's love interest played by DB Woodside, hubby of "Girlfriends" actress Golden Brooks. That man was a definitely eye candy for the ladies and some men as well.

So will I tune in again? Nah I don't think I will. As a black woman I don't believe in the concept of supporting a black show just because it's black. I need network television to not underestimate my intelligence by shoving anything in my face and expecting me to love. It's almost like when John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running mate and expected that he would get the female vote. Try again.

So what did you think of the show? Will you tune in next week?

Ciara on stage in Zimbabwe!

Ciara set the stage on fire in Zimbabwe this past weekend. At least that's I hear from the twitter universe. The "Goodies" singer along with Lil Kim, Fat Joe and DJ Scratch appeared in Harare at the Borrowdale Race Course and performed their hits. Now as you know Timbaland was also set to appear but he pulled out of the show at the last minute due to "unforseen circumstances"

Hmmm interesting? The super producer claims he will make it up to his Zimbabwean fans before he heads back stateside. Only time will tell.

Billed as the biggest hip hop concert in Africa, Zar fest continues on in Capetown, Durban and Jo-Burg this week.

The Oprah Winfrey show is officially over

Well the world certainly didn't end but something else just as huge did end..the Oprah Winfrey show!

May 25 marked the closing of Oprah's global show and it was just spectacular. There were no gifts, no surprises just Oprah doing what she does best..chatting with the audience and sharing life lessons and what the show has meant to her. She was preaching y'all! I had goosebumps listening to her speak, My favorite lines?

"You are responsible for your life and when you get that, everything changes'

You have the power to change somebody's life... Look around and you will see. Everybody has a calling

"What are the whispers in your life right now?"

A common thread for all of her 30K guests was a need for validation. 'i see you, I hear you, and what you saying matters to me"

She ended the show noting that this was not a goodbye rather "until we meet again" and she gave God all the glory. What momentous moment in TV history. Thank God for OWN!

Why do men cheat with unattractive women?

Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger
Considered one of America's favorites couples and married for over 25 years.. issh hit the fan this week in Schwarzenegger household. The media revealed the former Governor of California had fathered a child 10 years ago out of wedlock with the couple’s maid. Oh and  it get's better. The maid and Maria were pregnant at the same time, giving birth 5 days apart from one another. To make this clearer- this means that while uSisi (the maid) was in the house cleaning, dusting and performing her household duties she was also handling Maria’s wifely duties in the bedroom.
So naturally I was curious to see what this maid looked like. Surely Mildred Beana  must be a foxy lady for Arnold to carry on this sordid affair right under his wife's nose for the past 13 years.

Midred Baena Arnold’s mistress
Child please! In the infamous words of Bobby Brown she looks like "a bag of knuckles". My question is why do men cheat on their seemingly attractive wives with less attractive women?

Halle Berry, Janet Jackson, Garcelle Beavais-Nilon, Tiger's ex-wife (Elin) and most recently Eva Longoria are all part of the "get cheated on with the less attractive chick  club". After 2 years of marriage Eric Benet & Halle Berry had to call it quits. Mr. Benet was apparently treated for sex addiction at one point in their marriage. Actress Garcelle was irate when she found out about her husband’s affair, homegirl sent out an angry note to her then hubby’s collegaues detailing her devastation about the betrayal.

Halle Berry and Eric Benet

Declared one of the sexiest women in the world by countless magazines Eva Longoria’s fame was not enough to keep her husband Tony Parker from straying. He was allegedly “sexting” with a former team mate’s wife.

Eva Longoria and Tony Parker

Here's my disclaimer. I don't believe all men cheat. I do however believe that men in power are more susceptible to cheating. Celebrities often live in a bubble clouded by the easy access to women and money. People are more willingly to turn a blind eye to any and all inappropiate behavior. Hell, Tiger had a whole staff of people who's sole purpose was to keep the wool over's wife eyes.
Tiger and Elin in happier days

Here's what I know for sure. Men don't cheat because of looks. Usually when an person steps outside of the committed relationship it's because they are searching for something they feel is lacking in their relationship. It's obvisouly a very selfish, primal need and has no reflection on the person being cheated on. Your wife won't let you drink, well your side chick keeps the beer in the fridge. Your girl won't do the freaky issh you want, well the side is waiting to you show you new tricks.
Actress Garcelle Beavais-Nilon with former husband Mike Nilon

It's sad but true. Again this a reflection of the man and says nothing about the value of the woman. Ladies cheat too. The truth of the matter is that a relationship takes work. Communication is key and discussing any and all issues will usually cost you less than cheating on your partner. As for Arnold and Maria word on the street is that they didn't have a prenup. Word on the street is she has hired a divorce lawyer and will most likely walk away with over half of his 250 million dollar fortune. It's cheaper to keep her.

Are one in three Africans really middle class?

Middle class South Africans in Johannesburg's Soweto township.

There's an interesting article on the CNN site about the growing middle class sector in Africa. You can read the whole story here.  A report released last week by the African Development Bank (AFDB) said that Africa's middle class -- defined as people spending between $2 and $20 a day at 2005 prices -- increased to 34.3% of the continent's population in 2010 -- nearly 313 million

I question this whole study being based on the notion of being spending $2 to $25 a day. Sounds a bit silly to define that as middle class no? Notwithstanding the basis of the survey, there are indeed folks in Africa that seem to be indeed living the life. I just got back from South Africa a few months back and I find it highly probable that the middle class is growing. I saw many luxury cars on the roads, people dressed in the finest clothing and plenty of people living a very comfortable life. Emphasis on the word very in the previous sentence. I would be amiss not to mention the large and disproportionate  gap between the have's and have nots. Africa still has a ways to go in that regard.

So talk me, have you been to Africa or are you planning on going there? What's your take on the growing middle class?

Maria and maid had babies days apart!

You can't even make up this kind of drama.

According to Pop Eater Arnold Schwarzenegger's love child with the maid was born just days apart from his son with his wife Maria Shriver. Yep you heard correctly. 5 days apart! So this means that his mistress and his wife were both pregnant at the same time with his children.

I cant deal! This is just all kinds of wrong!

In case that mental image isn't enough, while Shriver was puttering around their house pregnant with Schwarzenegger's baby, their housekeeper was puttering around their house, cleaning and also pregnant with his baby.

Just insane! Thoughts?

Personal Weight Loss..UPDATE!

Hello Blogging Friends! Do you guys remember a few months ago (January specifically) when I attempted to lose 12 pounds in 6 weeks? Well I have good news and bad news!

The good news is that I have lost 9lbs so far ,meaning I am 3lbs away from my target weight. The bad news is unfortunately I didn't hit my 12lb mark in 6 weeks.

What I have learned about weight loss is that it cannot be approached as a diet fad, it is truly a lifestyle change. I get tempted constantly to eat chocolate, drink adult beverages (wink) or eat excessive amounts of pasta. I tried cutting myself completely off but that lasted just a few days. I say all that to say, moderation is your friend. You can still eat the same foods but moderation and working out are tried and true methods of long term weight loss.

Aaliyah one of my favorite singers said"if at first you don't succeed, dust yourself off and try again"

Good luck on your journey  and remember to keep moving!

CNN's Don Lemon Reveals in New Book: I'm Gay

“I think it would be great if everybody could be out. But it’s such a personal choice,"

CNN anchor Don Lemon reveals in his new memoir, Transparent, that he is gay.
"I think it would be great if everybody could be out,” he says in an interview with the New York Times. “But it’s such a personal choice. People have to do it at their own speed. I respect that. I do have to say that the more people who come out, the better it is for everyone, certainly for the Tyler Clementis of the world.”
Clementis is the Rutgers University student who jumped off New York City's George Washington Bridge after a sexual encounter with another male in his dorm room was taped by fellow students and broadcast online.

Staying because of the kids..

After a 25-year marriage as one of the nation's leading power couples in Hollywood and politics, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have split up. I cant even begin to imagine how difficult this announcement is for the couple, they have four children, ages 14, 18, 20 and 21, and long projected the image of a close and loving couple.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver
SGranitz/WireImage

I commend the couple for having the courage to split after the realization that years in the marriage neither party was happy. And listen Shriver is  55, and Schwarzenegger, 63, so I'm sure the concept of starting over at this stage of their lives is not ideal.

Hollywood and politics aside, I have heard of couples that instead of separating choose to stay in their marriages even if they fall out of love with their partner. Most attribute the reason to stay as fear of starting over or in most cases waiting it out for the kids. So my question of the day is this: would you stay in a marriage because of your kids? We have all heard the merits of raising children in a two parent household, is it worth sticking out after the love is gone?

Will You Be Watching “Good Christian B****es?”

This is the definition of when keeping it real goes wrong.

Disney-owned ABC Studios has stirred up a hornet’s nest over plans to debut a new television series this fall tentatively titled “Good Christian B****es”. I am not quite sure how those 3 words fit together in a sentence. Check out the premise of the show:

The pilot episode stars actress Leslie Bibb as Amanda, a mother of two and onetime “mean girl” in high school who returns home to Dallas following a scandalous divorce, only to discover she is the center of malicious gossip in the Christian community.

Based on the book of the same name by author Kim Gatlin, the TV series is being  executive produced by Darren Star, Emmy-winning creator of several steamy TV hits, including “Melrose Place,” “Beverly Hills, 90210″ and “Sex and the City.”

Quote of the Day - Sarah Ferguson

The original Fergie, Sarah Ferguson taped an episode of the Oprah show recently and revealed how she felt about not being invited to the Royal Wedding. She says:

'I was not invited. I felt that I ostracised myself by my behaviour, by the past, by living with all the regrets of my mistakes, that I sort of wore a hair shirt and beat myself up most of the day thinking and regretting why did I make such a mistake? Why have I made so many mistakes?'

Now you guys know that she wasn't invited to the wedding because she was caught red handed on camera  offering access to her ex-husband Prince Andrew for $724,000. Shameful! Who does that?

The Duchess of York now 51 continues to say: 'I went through the phase of feeling so totally worthless and that [it] was quite right they didn't invite me. Why would they - why would they invite me?'

The Oprah show with Fergie airs tomorrow- will you be watching?
